Business Prospects in Texas: Part 1

Today, we find our country in the midst of a recession, maybe even worse. People are losing their jobs, businesses are closing down, and the money seems to be disappearing before our eyes. Texas is no different from any other state in these hard times, the once financially safe border around the state has disintegrated, and the woes of the rest of the country are flowing in.

One way to see how the economy is faring in Texas is to look at the number of applications for new businesses. Growing business means a healthy economy, declining business means there are fewer new businesses and more veteran businesses are being forced in close their doors. According to the Texas Secretary of State, there was a decline of ten thousand new business applications to be submitted to the Texas government from last year to this year. While there are usually more than one hundred thousand new applications each year, ten thousand takes a heavy toll on the business community.

Business analysts predict a trickle effect in the amount of revenue the state and state government will bring in, for with fewer new businesses coming on the market, this means less taxes coming into the state government. This worries some as business taxes are a large part of the state’s revenue and could have bad effects on other departments in the state government.
