Lack of Customer Payment
Many businesses work on a model where customers pay up front for the cost of a product and do not receive it until payment has been received. Others, though, work on a more gradual payment plan or even a credit-based model where payment is not necessarily made right away. It can be difficult for some companies to recoup these payments from customers.
Especially in tough economic times, customers may be less likely to pay their accounts in full, even when they are due. There are some steps that companies can take to protect themselves in the event of a customer non-payment. Some of these include:
- Keeping detailed invoices and receipts. It is extremely important for your company to know exactly how much a customer owes, when they obtained the products or services, and if or when they have made some payment.
- Keep copies of payments. Especially in the case of installment payments, it is important to know when the last payment was received and how much is still outstanding.
- Maintain a record of communication. It is also very helpful to keep a record of any communication that goes back and forth between your company and a customer so that you can show you have made them aware of their debts, are awaiting payment, etc.
It may be that some companies are required to go through debt collection agencies or other third-party sources to recoup some of their customer’s payments. Regardless of the exact methods that are used to collect payment, it will always be helpful to have a detailed record of all aspects of the customer’s account.
