Negotiation Strategies
Many people have different approaches to negotiation, and there are various ways to be successful at the bargaining table. In any case, it is always helpful to be as prepared as possible for the negotiations. This means gathering all relevant facts, communication, and related information. It is especially important to have a plan of attack and a good idea of what the main goals of the negotiating will be. It is far more effective to have a specific goal in mind, rather than beginning the conversations aimlessly.
One strategy for negotiating is to give your best offer first. Some would argue that this tends to take away all of your leverage, and it can, if you overplay your hand. It is difficult to walk the fine line between not wasting time and divulging too much information.
Sometimes, after an agreement has been reached about the large issues, people will add smaller issues, looking for concessions after a bigger agreement has already been made. This can be effective, as most people typically have invested a lot of time and energy in reaching the larger agreement and are reluctant to jeopardize it. It is important not to take advantage of this, though, as it has the potential to backfire and result in the cancellation of the previous arrangement.
