Product Placement
Companies are always looking for ways to increase awareness of their company or product in the public’s mind. To this end, they invest large sums of money in marketing, advertising, and all of the subsidiaries of these two branches. Product placement is one of the outlets companies use to get their product out there.
Product placement, also called embedded marketing, is a type of advertising in which promotional advertisements are placed by marketers into another commercial product. The presence of the brand is the result of an economic exchange. For instance, a person in a movie walks into a convenience store and buys a Diet Coke. This is typically not a coincidence. If a product appears in a film as not part of some sort of economic exchange, it is called a product plug.
Products are often strategically placed in:
- Plays
- Movies
- Television shows
- Music videos
- Video games
- Books
Whenever a logo appears in a shot, product placement occurs. Favorable mention or appearance of a product in a shot also counts as product placement. Typically, these things are done without disclosure and under the premise that it is a natural part of the work.
The majority of major movie releases today contain at least some product placements. The most common form of product placement occurs in movie and television shows. More recently, computer and video games have started incorporating product placements. Websites have even started to experiment with the idea in an effort to generate revenue.
