Telecommuting
Telecommuting, also known as e-commuting, e-work, telework, working at home (WAH), and working from home (WFH), is a work or business arrangement that allows employees to enjoy flexibility in their work location and hours. It eliminates the daily commute to a central place of work and replaces it with telecommunication links.
Many individuals who engage in telecommuting work from home while a significant number of others use mobile telecommunications technology to work from coffee shops and a myriad of other locations. Those that work from coffee shops and other locations are known as nomad workers or web commuters.
Telework is a broader term than telecommuting. It refers to the substitution of telecommunications for any form of work-related travel. It therefore eliminates the distance restrictions of telecommuting. All telecommuters are teleworkers, but not all teleworkers are telecommuters.
Any successful telecommuting program requires a management style that is based on results or production and is not based on close scrutiny of individual employees. This is referred to as management by objectives instead of management by observation. Jack Nilles, an American, coined the terms telecommuting and telework in 1973.
Long distance telework is made easier and possibly by tools like virtual private networks, videoconferencing, and Voice over IP. It is possible for it to be efficient and useful for companies. It is useful because it allows staff and workers to communicate and work over a large distance, eliminating significant amounts of travel time and cost.
As broadband internet connections become more common, more and more workers have the ability via their home bandwidth to use the tools of telecommuting and telework to link their home office to their corporate networks.
