Weathering the Recession
There's no way around it: the United States is in a recession. As a business owner, you are particularly aware of this. You may be wondering about the future of your company, and how to keep it solvent when everything around you seems to be failing. When you see big companies like Chrysler going down the tubes, it can be easy to throw up your hands and wonder when it's going to end for you.
The Good News
The important thing to realize is that the big companies that are failing are doing so because they have a lack of identity and leadership. Remember the old adage about crisis being a confluence of danger and opportunity. In a certain way, the recession levels the playing field, making a well-run, ambitious company better able to take advantage of the situation.
Some Suggestions
If you're going to take advantage of the opportunity a recession provides, you need to keep a few things in mind:
- Build a plan. Recognize the problems in the marketplace and work on a plan for your company.
- Cut out the excesses. Identify the parts of your company that are operating at less than acceptable efficiency. Just as Olympic runners analyze footage of themselves to identify unnecessary movements, look for unnecessary parts of your company that are costing you money.
- Strive for quality. When the economy is down, consumers look for products and services that are worth the money.
- Don't be afraid to take a chance. When the economy is bad, it can seem that your safety net is down. But if you want to move your company forward, you have to always be willing to put yourself out there and take a chance.
