Advertising

Advertising is one of many forms of communication that companies use to persuade potential customers to purchase a brand of product or service. A number of advertisements are designed to generate consumption of a particular brand through the creation and reinforcement of “brand image” and “brand loyalty.”

To encourage brand image and loyalty, advertisements will embed factual information in their persuasive messages. Car companies are notorious for doing this. They all claim that a specific car is the toughest, longest lasting, most popular, or most commonly purchased, in an effort to get people to purchase their product.

Advertising is used through every major medium. These include:

Advertisements are frequently placed by advertising agencies on behalf of a company or other organization. Larger companies will have their own advertising department or contract with a specific large advertising firm.

Companies are always looking for places to get their message across to a captive audience. They want to put their advertisement in a place where a consumer cannot choose to change the channel or walk away.

There are a number of organizations or groups that spend a lot of money on advertising but that do not, in the common sense, sell a product or service. These groups include political parties, interest groups, religious organizations, and military recruiters. Non-profit organizations are not typically big advertising spenders.
