Challenges Faced by Small Business Owners in Times of Growth
If you’re a small business owner and your business is just starting to grow in a considerable way, you are likely to feel elated because it means that all of your hard work and energy is finally starting to pay off. Even though it’s an exciting time, it is not a time to rest on your laurels. There are always pitfalls to be aware of and a time of growth is no exception.
It’s exciting to see new business come in from various angles but it’s also important to manage your growth. It’s very important not to let things get out of hand. If you’re accustomed to producing 50 things a week and now have to produce 500 items a week, it would be easy for things to get out of hand. The infrastructure might not be in place to handle such an increase in volume in a very short period of time. The quality of the individual products may suffer as well. It is for this reason that many small businesses are not ready to grow exponentially but instead need small growth.
With the increase in revenues, it may be tempting to splurge a bit in both the personal and business realms. Many people have been surviving on very tight budgets and when their checking account suddenly has a lot more money in it, it’s tempting to overdo things a tad. When your business grows, you need to make sure that there is enough money set aside to account for a possibly higher tax bracket. Also, money needs to be set aside for times when the currently growing business hits a lull or a slight downturn. The lull might not happen but there needs to be enough discipline in place to control spending and set cash aside just in case.
